FAQs for First Time Pilates Participants

It’s natural to feel a bit of nervousness the first time joining a Pilates class in Carlton. I remember mine was nerve wracking since I don’t know anyone in class. A little bit of anxiety also set in as I had no prior experience of working out.

The odd-looking equipment and tools added to the intimidation that I felt during my first Pilates class but after the introduction stage, I felt a sense of comfort that things were going to be fine. Pilates is a client-centred exercise regime, and as soon as I learned the basics, I was ready to do more and realize my fitness goals.

If this is your first time, don’t fret. We’re here to answer some of the most frequently asked questions of beginner Pilates practitioners.

“What should I wear during a Pilates class?

When joining a Pilates class in Carlton, you don’t need to dress to the nines. Wear clothing items that are not too baggy nor too loose, so instructors can clearly see your movements or if you are able to perform the proper techniques.

Typically, Pilates classes will require you to be in bare foot. You may also use anti-slip socks that are specially designed for doing Pilates.

“What do I need to bring at a Pilates class?”

You don’t have to bring equipment to a Pilates class. Most Pilates studios provide the necessary equipment for their students. However, you may opt to bring your own mat for mat exercises as this is more hygienic and safer practice, especially amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Depending on the type of class, you may be using the Pilates apparatuses in the studio or a mat for novices.

“What type of Pilates class is great for beginners?”

A Pilates mat is a great place to start your Pilates fitness journey. Almost all fundamental Pilates movements can be performed on the mat, which can then be utilised once you move on to use the more sophisticated equipment in the studio.

The Pilates mat is also being used by advanced practitioners, so you will be going back and forth to the use of mat as you progress.

If you are not too keen on joining a Pilates class in Carlton with other people, you may also opt for private sessions. One-on-one training is also a great way to master the basic movements.

Once you are familiar with the basics, you’ll feel more confident. Eventually, you will find yourself wanting to do a group class with other people. As they say, “the more, the merrier.”

“What shouldn’t I wear or bring to a Pilates Class?”

You need to be casual and comfortable when dressing up or preparing for a Pilates class. I used to wear brightly coloured tops to my Pilates class and people don’t seem to mind. So be yourself and don’t be pressured to dress in neutral tones if those aren’t your style.

You need to make sure that you are comfortable in your clothes, so make sure the clothing is not too tight nor too loose.

Refrain from tying your hair back, as most Pilates movements will require you to lie comfortably on your back. Avoid wearing unnecessary items such as jewelleries, belts, and charms as they may disrupt the smooth flow of body movements.

Dangling accessories are a big no-no in Pilates, as drawstrings, belts, and tassels may accidentally get caught in the springs of most Pilates apparatuses which may result in injury. If you really need to tie your hair, I recommend you put your hair up on top of your head or loose down low, so you may execute all movements without hindrance.

Never wear makeup to a Pilates class. Pilates may seem easy at first glance, but trust me, you will sweat during your sessions. Come to your class with a bare face, so you don’t have to worry about your makeup smudging. Plus, the makeup stains when you perspire are not only eyesores but can be very difficult to take out!

We hope that you’ve learned a lot from our answers to frequently asked questions by beginners. I am enjoying my fitness journey through Pilates and I hope that you find fun, excitement, and challenge upon joining a Pilates class in Carlton!
